Saint Anna's Church

Temple , Architecture

The beautiful neo-Gothic church of Saint Anna in Ozeriany was built in 1875 by Prince Leon Sapieha.

The project was developed by the Viennese architect Adolf Kuhn, the author of the Sapiehas Palace in Lviv. The exquisite portal is decorated with rich decor. The coats of arms of the Sapiehas have been preserved on the facade.

After the Second World War, the premises of the temple were used as a warehouse.

Saint John Nepomuk Church

Temple , Architecture

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint John Nepomuk in Turylche was built in 1871 at the expense of Count Yan Starzhensky, although the village at that time belonged to the landowners Ivanovsky.

The slender building of the church is made in the Neo-Gothic style. Statues of the apostles Peter and Paul are installed in niches on the facade on the sides of the main entrance, which is why the church is sometimes called Peter and Paul Church.

During the times of Soviet power, an agricultural warehouse was located in the premises of the Saint John Nepomuk Church.

A carved altar with a crucifix and apostles on the sides has been preserved inside. Currently, the church does not function.

Saint John Nepomuk Sculpture

Monument

The sculptural composition, crowned with the figure of Saint John Nepomuk, was installed in Buchach at the crossroads of the roads to Ternopil and Chortkiv in 1750.

It was one of the early works of the outstanding sculptor Ivan Pinzel. Prague priest John Nepomuk was martyred in 1393, refusing to reveal the secret of the confession of the wife of Emperor Wenceslas IV of Luxembourg. The cult of the saint was widespread in the 18th century. John Nepomuk's roadside sculpture was ordered by Count Mykola Potocki to Pinzel, as evidenced by Potocki's "Pilyava" coat of arms on the pedestal.

During the Soviet era, the Saint John Nepomuk Sculpture was destroyed. Restored in 2007 in the former place (now the road fork is located a little higher), the author of the copy is Roman Vilhushynskyi.

Saint Onuphrius Church

Temple , Architecture

The Church of Saint Onuphrius in Husiatyn was built in the 16th century, when the defense system of the medieval city was being formed, which also included a castle and a synagogue.

Together with the church, they formed a fortified triangle with the town hall square inside. The thickness of the walls of the temple reaches 2.2 meters. The upper battle tier has not been preserved. It was probably a wooden gallery around the perimeter of the tower. The walls around the temple have been preserved.

During the Turkish rule of 1672-1683, the Saint Onuphrius Church was rebuilt into a mosque.

Today it is an active Greek Catholic church.

Saint Stanislav Dominican Church

Temple , Architecture

The Dominican Church of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and Saint Stanislav in Chortkiv was built in the Neo-Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century according to the project of the architect Yan Karol Sas-Zubzhytskyi on the site of the old cathedral, built in 1610 by the master of the city Stanislav Holsky as his burial place.

Initially, the Saint Stanislav Church was part of the defensive Dominican monastery complex, surrounded by walls with towers and loopholes, but before the First World War it was completely rebuilt (a fragment of the defensive wall remained on the back side).

The Dominican church in Chortkiv is considered one of the most beautiful neo-Gothic buildings in Ukraine. The architect Sas-Zubzhytskyi, being a supporter of historical stylizations, vividly embodied in this church the characteristic features of his own architectural style of "Visualian Gothic". The lower part of the church is made of stone, and the upper part is made of red brick. The figures of the saints were made by sculptors Cheslav Stovp and Diaman Stankevych.

During the Soviet rule, the Saint Stanislav Church was closed, but in 1989 it was returned to the Dominicans.

Since 2009, the temple in Chortkiv has been a sanctuary (holy repository) of the icon of the Mother of God of the Holy Rosary (Theotokos of Chortkiv).

Sapieha Burial Church

Temple , Architecture

The Roman Catholic church in Bilche-Zolote was founded in 1839. In its current form, it was rebuilt in 1898 as a burial chapel of the Sapieha family, who owned these lands.

The small building was built in the Neo-Gothic style. The facade depicts the Lithuanian coat of arms of Gediminas' descendants "Pohonya" (rider with a sword) and the family coat of arms of Sapieha "Fox" (arrow with a double crossbar).

Today it is the church of Saint Paraskeva of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

The church is located on the territory of Bilche-Zolote Park, a monument of garden architecture (1800, 11 hectares, 46 types of trees) on the site of the former manor house that belonged to the Sapiehas.

During the Soviet times, a cultural center was built on the foundations of the Sapieha Palace.

Skala-Podilska Castle

Castle / fortress

The ruins of the medieval castle in Skala-Podilska are located on a high rock on the right bank of the Zbruch River. Now it is one of the objects of the National Reserve "Castles of Ternopil Region".

The construction of the castle began in 1331 by princes Koriatovych (Koryatovych), who owned Podillya at that time, on the site of an old wooden fortification. In 1516, the Kamyanets chief Stanislav Lyantskoronsky restored the castle destroyed by the Tatars, supplementing it with powerful walls and bastions. In 1648, it was captured by Cossack troops, then it repeatedly changed hands during the Polish-Turkish wars.

In the first half of the 18th century, the headman of Skala, Adam Tarlo, rebuilt a palace in the baroque style with magnificent decor on the ruins, but only a few years later the building burned down due to a lightning strike. Since then, the castle has not been rebuilt. In Soviet times, the ruins were preserved.

Access is free.

Tvorovsky Castle

Castle / fortress

The picturesque ruins of the Tvorovsky Castle adorn the high bank of the Strypa River in Pidzamochok near Buchach. This is one of the objects of the National Reserve "Castles of Ternopil Region".

The inscription above the main entrance tower indicates that the castle was built in 1600 by Voivode Yan Buchachsky-Tvorovskyi. The Renaissance portal of the building is decorated with a coat of arms with crossed arrows, the origin of which is unknown, since it does not correspond to the coat of arms "Abdank" of the Buchachsky family, nor to the coat of arms of the "Pylyava" family of the Potocki family, who owned the castle later (perhaps this is the ancient coat of arms of the Buchachskys or the coat of arms of the illegitimate son of the owner of Buchach ).

The castle protected the approaches to Buchach from the northeast, and also served as a country residence for local feudal lords. It was repeatedly destroyed, in the 18th century it was abolished by the Austrian authorities. Currently in a neglected state.

A fascinating panorama of the Strypa valley opens from the ruins.

Verteba Cave (Trypillya Culture Museum)

Museum / gallery , Natural object

The Verteba gypsum cave in Bilche-Zolote is one of the largest in Europe. The length of the underground passages is 7820 meters.

The cave consists of wide galleries separated by narrow bridges. The walls are smooth and dark, on the vaults there are carbonate formations in the form of crusts, less often - small stalactites. The average annual temperature in the cave is 9-10 degrees with a relative humidity of 92-100%.

In the V-IV millennium BC, the Verteba cave was used by people as a shelter in case of danger.

In the 19th century, when these lands belonged to the Sapehy princes, more than 300 whole ceramic jugs and a huge number of figurines, sherds, stone and bone tools belonging to the Trypillya culture were found in the cave. Most of them settled in various Polish museums, but some items can be seen in the Borshchiv Museum of Local Lore.

A cave-museum of Trypillya culture has been opened in Verteba, where a collection of sculptures and ceramics in the Trypillya style is exhibited.

Waterfall "Maiden's Tears" (Hermit's Сave)

Natural object

The complex nature monument of local importance "Pustelnia Tract" with the waterfall "Maiden's Tears" and the grotto "Hermit's Cave" is located 1.5 kilometers south of Nyrkiv. This is one of the objects of the National Nature Park "Dniester Canyon".

A small grotto is carved out of the travertine rock above the Dzhuryn River. Before the Second World War (according to other sources, at the end of the 19th century), a hermit monk lived in the cave, who was engaged in stone carving. A statue of Saint Onuphrius, carved by a hermit, has been partially preserved.

Part of the cave was destroyed by a landslide.

Three statues of the Mother of God are installed above the spring at the approach to the hermit's cave. The waters of the spring flow down from the rock in thin streams of the "Maiden's Tears" waterfall, around which a special microclimate with unusual vegetation has formed. In 2024, the waterfall suffered from a travertine rock collapse.

The ascent to the "Pustelnia Tract" from Dzhurynskyi Waterfall takes about half an hour. Car access is possible from the side of Ustechko village.

Yazlovets Castle

Architecture , Castle / fortress

Yazlovets Castle, nicknamed the "Key of Podillya", in the 16th and 17th centuries was one of the most important defensive structures in the eastern part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, along with Kamyants-Podilskyi. Now it is one of the objects of the National Reserve "Castles of Ternopil Region".

The castle in Yazlovets was founded by representatives of the magnate family of Buczacki-Jazłowiecki. In the 15th century, Teodoryk Buczacki-Jazłowiecki turned it into a powerful bastion, in 1550-1575 Jerzy Jazłowiecki expanded the castle and later completed a huge four-story tower. Below were casemates, on the third floor was the entrance to the city, on the fourth floor there were living quarters. The gate was led by a bridge on wooden posts, in its final part - hinged.

In 1643, the new owner Hetman Aleksandr Koniecpolski built an outer defensive ring - the Lower Castle. During the Liberation War, the fortress withstood the siege of the Cossack troops, but in 1672 it fell under the pressure of the Turks.

In 1746, Stanisław Poniatowski (father of the Polish king Stanisław August) built a palace on the site of the Lower Castle, which was remodeled and improved by Baron Krzysztof Błażowski.

In 1863, the baron donated the palace with the ruins of the castle and the garden to the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception for the establishment of a convent and a school for girls. Blessed Marcelina Darowska, the founder of the monastery, is buried in the crypt on the territory.

During Soviet times, the monastery was closed, there was a hospital, then a sanatorium. The latter is still functioning, sharing premises with the monastery, which was revived in 1999.

Today it is the Retreat House named after Marcelina Darowska of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The nuns keep the palace and park in good condition and welcome tourists.
